A young chimpanzee becomes self-sufficient relatively quickly. A human child may remain dependent for nearly two decades. At first glance, this seems like an evolutionary disadvantage: childhood consumes enormous amounts of food, time and parental effort without producing much in return.

But human survival has never depended merely on strength. It requires learning a vast library of skills—tracking animals, extracting underground foods, making tools, navigating relationships and absorbing culture.

A study examining child and adolescent foragers across 28 societies found a revealing pattern. Children reached adult productivity relatively quickly when collecting easier resources such as fruit. But proficiency developed much more slowly for difficult resources such as game and deeply buried tubers, often peaking only in adulthood. A review of 34 hunter-gatherer cultures similarly found that basic gathering skills emerged during childhood, while complex hunting and toolmaking required instruction and years of practice.

The evidence strongly establishes that humans acquire complex subsistence skills unusually slowly. More debated is the evolutionary explanation: that natural selection specifically prolonged childhood to create a protected “learning apprenticeship.” Our extended childhood may be costly—but it allows each generation to inherit knowledge that genes alone could never contain.
