Did You Really Choose Vanilla Ice Cream?
Imagine that you suddenly feel like eating ice cream.
You drive to a nearby shop, walk inside, study the menu and decide to order vanilla. But before you reach the counter, you change your mind. You leave the shop without buying anything and return home.
It certainly feels as though you made several independent choices:
- You chose to visit the ice-cream shop.
- You chose vanilla.
- You reconsidered your decision.
- You chose to go home.
But Robert Sapolsky, the neuroscientist and author of Determined: A Science of Life Without Free Will, would ask a disturbing question:
Did you truly choose any of those things?
Sapolsky’s answer is no.
According to him, every thought, desire and decision arises from causes that existed before we became consciously aware of them. Our behavior is produced by an enormously complicated chain of biology, genetics, upbringing, culture, hormones, memories and immediate circumstances.
We experience ourselves as authors of our decisions. Sapolsky argues that we are more like the final witnesses to processes that have already been unfolding inside us.
The Central Argument: There Is No Independent “Chooser”
Sapolsky does not merely claim that our freedom is limited. His position is much stronger: free will does not exist at all.
When a person behaves generously, loses their temper, commits a crime, studies diligently or abandons a diet, we usually imagine that there is an independent self inside the person choosing among different possibilities.
Sapolsky rejects this picture.
He argues that there is no separate, uncaused “you” standing outside your brain and directing it. The person making the decision is the brain itself—and the brain is a biological organ shaped by everything that has happened to it.
Your brain at this moment has been influenced by:
- The genes you inherited.
- Conditions in your mother’s womb.
- Childhood nutrition and stress.
- Parenting and education.
- Social class and culture.
- Past rewards and punishments.
- Hormone levels.
- Sleep quality.
- Hunger and blood sugar.
- Recent experiences.
- The sights, sounds and smells around you.
None of these factors was originally chosen by you. Yet together, Sapolsky argues, they create the person who appears to be making the choice.
Why Did You Want Ice Cream?
Let us return to the ice-cream shop.
Why did you want ice cream in the first place?
Perhaps you had not eaten for several hours, and your blood sugar had fallen. Maybe the brain’s reward system began anticipating the pleasure of sugar and fat. Perhaps you saw an advertisement earlier in the day or smelled dessert while passing a restaurant.
You may not consciously remember these influences, but they can still affect your behavior.
Your preference for vanilla also has a history. Maybe vanilla was the flavor your parents bought when you were young. Perhaps it is connected with pleasant memories of family outings. Your taste preferences may also be influenced by genetics, sensory sensitivity, habit and cultural familiarity.
So when you say, “I freely chose vanilla,” Sapolsky would respond:
Why did vanilla appeal to you more than chocolate at that particular moment?
You did not choose your taste buds. You did not choose your childhood experiences. You did not deliberately create the memories and associations that made vanilla attractive.
The desire simply appeared in consciousness.
But You Changed Your Mind
Changing your mind seems like strong evidence for free will.
You initially wanted vanilla, but then you reconsidered. Surely that proves you were capable of overriding the original impulse.
Sapolsky would say that the change of mind also had causes.
Perhaps you noticed that the line was unusually long. Maybe you suddenly remembered that you were trying to lose weight. You may have seen the price and decided it was not worth the money. A recent medical test might have reminded you to reduce sugar or saturated fat.
It is also possible that no clear reason entered your conscious mind. Your motivation simply changed.
But even then, Sapolsky would argue that something changed in the brain. Competing systems were evaluating different possibilities:
“Ice cream will taste good.”
“I should protect my health.”
“This is too expensive.”
“I am no longer in the mood.”
“I would rather go home.”
The final action depended on which motivation became strongest. And the strength of each motivation was shaped by prior causes.
Your change of mind was real. What Sapolsky disputes is that it came from an independent self untouched by biology or history.
The Brain as a Biological Decision-Making Machine
Sapolsky describes the brain not as a machine in the crude sense of being simple or inflexible, but as an extraordinarily complex biological system.
When we make a decision, many regions of the brain interact. Some evaluate rewards. Others detect threats, recall memories, control impulses or predict consequences.
Hormones and neurotransmitters influence these systems. Stress can make a person more reactive. Exhaustion can weaken self-control. Fear can narrow attention. Social acceptance can make a particular choice feel safer.
A decision may therefore begin taking shape before the person becomes consciously aware of it.
Consciousness may provide an explanation afterward:
“I decided vanilla was not worth it.”
But Sapolsky asks whether this explanation is the true cause of the behavior—or merely the story the brain tells after unconscious processes have produced the outcome.
Predetermined Does Not Mean Easily Predictable
A common objection is that human behavior is unpredictable. Even people who know us well cannot always predict what we will do.
But unpredictability does not prove free will.
Weather is also difficult to predict. That does not mean a storm freely chooses where to move. Weather results from physical conditions, but the number of interacting variables makes precise forecasting difficult.
Human behavior is vastly more complicated.
To predict whether you will buy ice cream, someone might need to know:
- Your current blood sugar.
- What you ate earlier.
- Your hormone levels.
- Your financial concerns.
- Your medical history.
- Your childhood associations with ice cream.
- Your recent conversations.
- The temperature outside.
- The length of the queue.
- The expression on the cashier’s face.
- A memory that entered your mind seconds earlier.
Because we do not possess all this information, your action appears spontaneous. Sapolsky argues that it nevertheless arose from causes.
Determinism does not mean that behavior is simple. It means that behavior does not arise without a cause.
What About Self-Control?
Suppose you left the shop because you wanted to protect your health. Does that not demonstrate discipline and personal responsibility?
Sapolsky would agree that self-control exists as a biological ability. Some people are better able to delay gratification, regulate emotions and consider long-term consequences.
But he would ask where that ability came from.
A person’s capacity for self-control may be influenced by genetics, childhood stability, education, stress exposure, sleep, nutrition and development of the prefrontal cortex.
Even the desire to improve oneself has causes. You may exercise because a doctor warned you about your health, because you admired a disciplined parent or because past suffering motivated you to change.
People can learn. They can develop new habits. Their brains can adapt. But the learning and adaptation also occur through causes.
Sapolsky’s determinism does not mean that people never change. It means that change happens because something produces it.
Why This Matters for Moral Responsibility
The book becomes especially controversial when Sapolsky applies determinism to morality and criminal justice.
Society normally distinguishes between people who deserve praise and those who deserve blame. We reward success, punish wrongdoing and assume that people could have chosen differently.
Sapolsky challenges this assumption.
If a person’s behavior arose from genes, brain development, trauma, poverty, mental illness, social conditions and immediate circumstances, in what ultimate sense did that person create themselves?
He does not argue that dangerous people should simply be released. Society must protect itself. A violent offender may need to be confined, just as a person carrying a dangerous infection may need to be isolated.
But the purpose should be protection, prevention and rehabilitation—not revenge.
We do not punish a malfunctioning car because it morally deserves suffering. We repair it, restrict its use or remove it from the road.
Sapolsky wants society to approach destructive human behavior with the same practical logic, while still recognizing the humanity of the person involved.
Determinism Can Produce Greater Empathy
One of the most powerful implications of Sapolsky’s argument is that it may reduce hatred.
When someone behaves badly, we naturally think:
“They chose to be that way.”
But determinism encourages us to ask:
“What happened biologically, psychologically and socially to produce this behavior?”
This does not mean approving every action. Understanding is not the same as excusing. We can condemn harmful behavior, protect victims and enforce boundaries without imagining that offenders created themselves from nothing.
The same reasoning also applies to success.
A successful person may possess intelligence, emotional stability, supportive parents, good health, educational opportunities and useful social connections. Hard work matters, but the capacity and motivation to work hard also have histories.
Sapolsky’s view therefore challenges both moral hatred and excessive pride.
The unlucky deserve more compassion, while the fortunate have less reason for arrogance.
Can Life Still Have Meaning Without Free Will?
Many people fear that determinism makes life meaningless.
Why make plans, study, exercise or give advice if everything is caused?
Sapolsky’s answer is that causes still matter.
Advice can change behavior because advice becomes a new cause. Education changes the brain. Treatment alters symptoms. Laws influence incentives. Encouragement increases confidence. A warning can prevent an accident.
If someone tells you that frequent ice cream consumption could damage your health, that information may affect your future decisions. The fact that your response has causes does not make the response meaningless.
A thermostat has no free will, yet changing its setting changes the temperature. Human beings are incomparably more complex, responsive and adaptable.
We do not need metaphysical freedom to learn, love, create, cooperate or build meaningful relationships.
A Challenge to Sapolsky
Sapolsky’s argument is powerful, but it is not universally accepted.
Critics point out that showing that decisions are influenced by biology does not automatically prove that all forms of free will are impossible. Some philosophers define free will not as freedom from causation, but as the ability to act according to one’s own reasons, values and desires without external coercion.
Under this definition, you acted freely when you left the ice-cream shop because you responded to your own judgment—even if that judgment had biological and historical causes.
This position is called compatibilism: the view that determinism and meaningful freedom can coexist.
Sapolsky rejects this compromise. He believes that if you did not choose the causes that created your preferences, personality and reasoning, then you cannot claim ultimate authorship of the resulting decision.
The debate therefore depends partly on what we mean by “free.”
Are we free when we act according to our desires?
Or must true freedom require that we somehow choose the desires themselves?
So, Was the Ice-Cream Decision Predetermined?
From Sapolsky’s perspective, yes.
You went to the shop because of prior biological and environmental causes. You preferred vanilla because of your inherited traits and personal history. You changed your mind because another set of thoughts, memories or sensations became more influential. You returned home because, at that moment, going home became the strongest outcome produced by your brain.
You genuinely experienced desire, hesitation and reconsideration. Sapolsky does not deny those experiences.
What he denies is the existence of a separate inner controller that could have acted independently of every influence that created it.
Your mind changed—but according to Sapolsky, you did not independently choose the causes that changed it.
The Uncomfortable Question
Determined forces us to confront one of the most difficult questions about human existence:
Are we the authors of our thoughts, or are we the place where thoughts happen?
Sapolsky asks us to imagine a society that takes the second possibility seriously—a society less interested in blame and revenge and more interested in causes, prevention, treatment and compassion.
Whether or not we fully accept his conclusion, his argument changes the way we look at human behavior.
The next time you make a decision—whether to accept a job, lose your temper, forgive someone or order vanilla ice cream—you may pause and wonder:
Did I create this decision, or did countless events create the person who made it?
