Among mammals, fathers usually contribute surprisingly little to raising offspring. Humans are unusual: across many societies, fathers may provide food, protection, teaching, childcare, or resources for years.
Why?
One evolutionary explanation begins with a uniquely expensive child. Human children take a long time to grow, require enormous amounts of food and care, and remain dependent far longer than most mammalian young. Under those conditions, children whose mothers received reliable help could have had an advantage.
This may have favored a shift from primarily mating effort—competing for additional partners—toward greater parenting effort.
There is intriguing biological evidence for this trade-off. A longitudinal study of Filipino men found that men who became fathers experienced larger declines in testosterone than men who remained single and childless. Fathers providing more daily childcare had especially low evening testosterone. Other research has similarly linked lower testosterone with greater nurturing involvement in fathers.
Evolutionary models also suggest that ecological changes making valuable foods difficult for mothers and children to obtain could have increased the payoff from male provisioning.
What is well supported: humans evolved an unusually flexible system of paternal investment, and fatherhood is associated with measurable behavioral and hormonal changes.
What remains debated: why intensive fathering originally evolved. Child provisioning, pair bonding, mating competition, paternity certainty and ecology probably all mattered, and researchers disagree about their relative importance.
The larger lesson is fascinating:
Natural selection didn’t only shape humans to produce children. It also helped shape us to spend years investing in them.
