A newborn horse can stand within hours. A human baby cannot even hold up its head. The familiar explanation is that evolution shortened pregnancy so a baby’s brain could squeeze through the mother’s pelvis.

But newer evidence complicates that story.

Human newborns possess less than 25% of their eventual adult brain size, compared with roughly 40–50% in many primates. Yet a comparison of 140 mammal species found that the human newborn brain is not unusually small for a primate newborn. Instead, the adult human brain becomes extraordinarily large. Our babies appear “unfinished” largely because they still have so far to go.

Well supported: humans undergo exceptionally rapid brain growth after birth and develop movement skills unusually slowly. The pelvis also closely constrains the size and shape of the baby that can pass through it.

Still debated: what primarily determines birth timing. One hypothesis says pregnancy ends when the mother approaches her sustainable metabolic limit. However, a 2026 analysis found no consistent connection between that proposed limit and the timing of birth, renewing support for obstetric constraints and altered developmental growth patterns.

Another appealing—but unproven—idea is that extended brain development outside the womb increases plasticity, allowing experience and culture to shape the brain.

Human babies may not be prematurely born. They may simply begin an unusually long construction project.
