Early pregnancy can transform ordinary smells—meat, coffee or cooking vegetables—into instant nausea. One evolutionary hypothesis suggests that this misery once functioned as a protective alarm.
Pregnancy sickness usually intensifies during the first trimester, when the embryo’s developing organs are especially vulnerable.
Historically, meat and other animal products could carry dangerous pathogens, while certain plants contained defensive chemicals.
Nausea, vomiting and food aversions may therefore have reduced a mother’s exposure to substances capable of harming her or the embryo.
The strongest evidence comes from a prospective study in which women recorded symptoms daily from early pregnancy.
Nausea alone, or nausea accompanied by vomiting, was associated with a 50–75% lower risk of pregnancy loss.
Well supported: pregnancy sickness is common, concentrates early in pregnancy and is statistically associated with lower miscarriage risk.
Plausible but debated: natural selection specifically designed it to reject toxins and contaminated food. The association does not prove protection; nausea may instead indicate strong placental hormone production and an already viable pregnancy.
A recent review also found that several predictions of the protective hypothesis remain insufficiently tested.
Normal nausea might carry an evolutionary echo—but severe vomiting, dehydration or weight loss is a medical condition requiring treatment, not a beneficial adaptation to endure.
