Is Your Salary Really Made of Salt?
Every payday, you use a word seasoned with ancient history.
Salary entered English through Anglo-French salarie, but its deeper ancestor is the Latin salarium, a payment or allowance. Salarium is related to sal, the Latin word for “salt”—also the source of words such as saline and salad.
This connection makes sense. In the ancient world, salt was not merely a table seasoning. It preserved meat and other food before refrigeration, making it strategically and economically important.
You may have heard that Roman soldiers were paid in bags of salt. It is a memorable story—but there is no reliable historical evidence for it. Roman records indicate that a salarium was a fixed monetary payment made to certain officials and others. Exactly why it acquired its connection to salt remains uncertain; it may originally have referred to “salt money” or simply used salt as a symbol of something valuable.
Over time, salarium broadened into the familiar meaning of regular payment for work.
So your salary is genuinely connected to salt—but the popular story explaining that connection should be taken with, appropriately enough, a grain of salt.
Both words ultimately come from the Latin word sal, meaning “salt.”
Saline: Water Containing Salt
Saline comes from the Latin salinus, meaning “made of salt” or “relating to salt.”
Today, saline describes a solution containing dissolved salt. For example, medical saline is sterile water mixed with sodium chloride at a concentration compatible with the human body.
The connection is direct:
Latin sal (salt) → salinus (salty) → saline
Salad: Vegetables Seasoned with Salt
Salad has a less obvious—but more interesting—connection.
The Romans ate raw vegetables seasoned with salt, oil, or vinegar. They called this dish herba salata, meaning “salted vegetables” or literally “salted herbs.”
Over time, salata traveled through Old French as salade and entered English as salad.
The journey was:
Latin sal (salt) → salata (salted) → French salade → English salad
So saline means something containing salt, while salad originally meant vegetables prepared with salt. Even the word sauce may be a distant relative, coming from Latin salsus, meaning “salted.”
