Parkinson’s Law states:
Work expands to fill the time available for its completion.
In other words, the more time you give yourself to complete a task, the more complicated and time-consuming that task tends to become.
Simple example
Suppose you need to prepare a short presentation:
- With a two-hour deadline, you focus on the essential points and finish it.
- With a two-week deadline, you may spend days researching, changing fonts, redesigning slides and repeatedly revising the wording.
The task may occupy the entire two weeks—even though it could have been completed in a few hours.
Why it happens
When too much time is available, people often:
- Procrastinate before starting.
- Overthink simple decisions.
- Add unnecessary details.
- Repeatedly revise completed work.
- Allow meetings and discussions to become longer than necessary.
Parkinson’s Law at work
A manager schedules a one-hour meeting for a matter that could be settled in 15 minutes. Because an hour is available, the discussion continues for nearly an hour.
Similarly, an organization may hire more employees and create more administrative procedures even when the actual workload has not increased proportionately.
How to use it positively
Give tasks short but realistic deadlines. Instead of saying, “I will study AWS this evening,” say:
“From 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., I will complete one lesson and answer 20 practice questions.”
You can also:
- Break large projects into smaller deadlines.
- Decide what “good enough” means before starting.
- Use time blocks for specific outcomes.
- Stop when the required result has been achieved.
- Avoid polishing work that no longer meaningfully improves.
Important limitation
Parkinson’s Law does not mean every task should be rushed. Complex work still requires enough time for accuracy, reflection and quality control. The lesson is to avoid giving a task unlimited time, because unlimited time often produces delay rather than better results.
The central idea:
A deadline does not merely determine when work ends—it often determines how long the work takes.
